Inspiring Wellbeing - Episode 6

Digesting food, emotions and beliefs

When we talk about digestion, we think about how the body processes the foods we eat.

As a nutritionist it amazing that not many people know that digestion starts in the mouth and how important it is to chew our food. Carbohydrates such as pasta, fruit smoothies, potatoes, etc. require the enzymes contained in the saliva called Amylase to start to digestion the sugars. The process of chewing helps to fraction the food before it enters the stomach.

The mouth is also used in communication. Have you ever considered digesting your conversations? It’s when conversations are left incomplete that they may create misunderstandings. It is also these misunderstanding that has the mind kicks in to find resolution. Unfortunately, in the process, the mind may take a pebble and turn into to mountainous problem. Spinning thought create emotional upset.

Two things are happening here, until the problem get resolved, some people may take days, weeks sometimes months and even years of being upset at a person or situation. During this time, digestion is compromised and secondly, all the emotional upset that gets created remains unresolved and trapped in the body’s trame or matrix.

Emotions not only interfere with digestion; it is at the source of dis-ease.

Emotions tend to accumulate in the lower part of the body. In yoga we call this the lower triangle.

There is a powerful breathing practice that helps to dissipate these trapped emotions. This breath is called the Breath of Fire. As the name suggests, the fire that gets generated acts on burning away impurities in the body.

It is our duty to purify our body of toxins and especially unfinished business and emotional suppression. Notice your thoughts. What recurring thoughts keeps coming up? What needs to be said, forgiven or released?

As you do this exercise, you may come across dis-empowering thoughts or beliefs. The ones that make you feel like you are bad and wrong, not good enough or not wanted or unlovable. I invite you to do an inventory of your beliefs. Keep the ones that empower you and choose to discard the ones that are dis-empowering. Replace them with beliefs about yourself that inspire you.

The Breath of Fire that I share with you in this video below is potent in its healing capacity. I encourage you to include this in your daily regime. Practice the Breath of Fire for one minute to three minutes for beginners. You may work yourself up to eleven minutes daily. This is enough to replenish all the energy you need for your daily activities.

Here are the benefits of Breath of Fire.

  • Releases toxins and deposits from the lungs and mucous lining.

  • Helps the body reach an optimum acid-alkaline balance, reducing irritability and plaque production in the arteries.

  • Strengthens the nervous system to resist stress.

  • Increases oxygen delivery to the brain, facilitating a focused, intelligent and neutral state of mind

  • Boosts the immune system and may help prevent many diseases.

  • Reduces addictive impulses for drugs, smoking and bad foods

Note: If you feel dizzy, stop. However, some tingling, traveling sensation and lightheaded is normal as the body is adjusting to levels of oxygen and stimulation of the nerves.

Restrict doing breath of fire during menstruation or while pregnant.
